A trip between nature and culture

This is a vast territory , which hosts very diverse environments from the uninhabited Supramonte wide areas to the smooth grape cultivated valleys to end with the Gollei basalt high plateaus where pasture, grape and olive plantations mix with each other.

The Dorgali country side is made of wide open spaces , where human beings have left very nice works: characteristic sheep-folds made out of stones and juniper wood used by goatherds and shepherds, as well as many country-side churches, witnessing a strong attention from the local community to the mystery of sacred beliefs and god.

Breeding , agriculture , civil and modern history (let’s not forget the laws regarding fences) have formed, according to natural laws, the Dorgali country-side panorama.

Nature and culture are to be discovered in order to understand the spirit of this community , which , through-out its millenary history , has been able to respect and preserve the balance of its incredible natural surroundings.

Supramonte and Gollèi areas

The Supramonte is a vast area divided into two parts by the state road nbr.125, otherwise called “Orientale Sarda”, which divides the mountain region from the sea region. The mountain region or Supramonte montano , is bordered by the Supramonte of Orgosolo , Oliena and Urzulei. Among its highest peaks, we can list Monte Oddeu , Monte Tundu , campo cutturgios, Monte omene. In its inland areas very suggestive natural monuments can be found, such as the gorropu gorge (gola di gorruppu) characterized by its 400 m. tall walls and its canyons , among the tallest and widest in Europe (see box or itinerary) the mysterious tiscali nuragic village(see box with itinerary ) and the doinanicoro high plateau are also located there. This last one is spread on a calcareous high plateau of 3 sq. km at 900 m, above sea level. This mountain area is considered to be a sacred temple for all those tourists who love trekking , wild flora and fauna ( it is not difficult to watch Sardinian mouflons ). Not less suggestive is the sea region or supramonte Marino , bordered by the crystalline sea waters from the Orosei Gulf , it is crossed by long canyons, which end in the sea. It has fascinating beaches, such as cala fuili and cala Luna (see box).

Gollèi: it is an area characterized by rocks made out of ancient volcanic eruptions. It is crossed by the cedrino river. Grape and olive plantations smooth its landscape, also covered by typical Mediterranean maquis and thin holm oak woods.Rural architecture: churches and typical sheep-folds.While travelling along small country roads around town, it is not difficult to find and admire small rural churches. They were built during the 17th Century and dedicated to our lady and to many saints ( nostra signora de s’ena, nostra signora degli angeli, san pantaleo, Madonna di buon cammino , Madonna di valverde, S. Giovanni crisostomo, spirit santo , san giovani battista).

Their architecture is simple but it can be well appreciated because of the beauty of its surrounding landscape . often around the churches, small houses (cumbessias) were built. The faithful used to inhabit those structures for several days during the religious saints’ commemorations, which usually ended with big dinners, attended by many people. This was very strong tradition until the beginning of the 90’s. Among the eight monuments one can find there, we suggest visiting the small church dedicated to the Madonna di buon Camino , located in oddoene area (see box about tiscali tour ). Another example of rural architecture can be found in the typical sheep-folds(cuiles). These were simple huts displayed on a circular base made out of limestone, with wooden conical covers. They used to be inhabited by shepherds, especially goathers, who used to make goat milk cheese.

Nowadays , they are often used by excursionists as base camps or places for meals during their tour itineraries in the supramonte area.
